Topical Issues Add Spice to August 7 History Gathering in Prescott

Politics, controversial legislation, gold, robbery, murder, war heroes and Rough Riders will be among the topics explored at the seventh annual Western History Symposium on Saturday, August 7 in Prescott.

The Sharlot Hall Museum will be the venue for five presentations about the Old West and the Arizona Territory on August 7 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then at 7:15 p.m. at the Hotel St. Michael, Dr. Martin Feess, the author of Theodore Roosevelt’s Arizona Boys, will discuss Roosevelt’s special connection to the Arizona Territory and his relationship with those “rough riding men from Arizona” who served under his command during the Spanish-American War.

The Symposium presentations are free and open to the public, although seating at the Museum is limited. The Symposium includes five presentations at the Museum’s Lawler Exhibit Center on August 7, starting at 10 a.m. with the “Canyon Diablo Train Robbery of 1889,” presented by Dr. Paul Hietter of Mesa Community College. Other presentations are “Murder on Whiskey Row,” presented by Prescott Corral member Fred Veil, an attorney and a regular Symposium speaker; “Early Female Politicians in Arizona,” presented by Dr. Heidi Osselaer of Arizona State University; “Ernest Love,” the namesake of Prescott’s Love Field, presented by author Alan Roesler; and “The Founding of Prescott,” presented by author-historian Al Bates.

In conjunction with the evening program about Teddy Roosevelt at the Hotel St. Michael, the Prescott Corral of the Westerners is hosting a social hour with a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner. The check must be received by July 30 in order to confirm the dinner reservation.

Also on the evening program, the Sharlot Hall Museum will present its annual Sharlot Hall Award to Kay Benedict for her valuable contributions to the understanding and awareness of Arizona and its history.

Beware of Tularemia

A domestic cat from the Prescott area has been recently diagnosed with tularemia. Tularemia is a treatable, naturally occurring illness in the United States, with about 200 human cases reported each year, and most cases occurring in the western and south-central states. It is caused by a germ found in animals (especially rodents, rabbits and hares), and is passed to both domestic animals and people. The cat in question has a history of killing a rabbit prior to getting sick.

“We usually see one to two cases of tularemia in animals each year in Yavapai County. The state only averages one human case of tularemia per year,” says Stephen Everett, Epidemiologist for Yavapai County Community Health Services (YCCHS).

People and pets who spend time outdoors can contract tularemia if they are bitten by infected deerflies, ticks, or other insects, or by handling infected rodents or rabbits. Family pets with outdoor roaming privileges can carry ticks into the home and may expose humans to tick-borne illnesses. Rarely, tularemia can spread to humans through contaminated food or water, or by inhaling the airborne germ. It is not known to spread from person to person.

You can avoid contracting tularemia by applying DEET insect repellent to exposed skin while spending time outdoors. People can also apply tick medicine and tick collars to cats and dogs to protect both the pet and the owner.

Symptoms in humans include sudden fever, chills, headaches, diarrhea, muscle aches, joint pain, dry cough, progressive weakness, and in worst cases can cause pneumonia. Symptoms vary from person to person, and generally show up 3-5 days after exposure, but sometimes as late as 14 days later.

If you think you may have contracted tularemia, contact your doctor at the first sign of illness. Be sure to let your doctor know if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Note any changes in your pet’s behavior, and consult a veterinarian if they develop unusual symptoms.

For more information or concerns about tularemia, please contact YCCHS Environmental Health Unit at (928) 771-3149 in Prescott

Seeing Eye to Eye: Creative Dialogues Between a Mother and Daughter

By Karen Lindquist and Signe Lindquist In the ‘Tis Arts Center’s Mezzanine Gallery

August 1-31, 2010 Opening Reception Friday August 13th 5 – 7 p.m.

Gyotaku Workshop (Ancient Japanese Printmaking with Fish) for children of all ages August 22nd 12 – 3 p.m. with Signe Lindquist

4th Friday Reception Friday August 27th 5 - 7

“Seeing Eye to Eye” is about the unique visual dialogue between Karen Lindquist and Signe Lindquist. Painting since childhood, through their university and post-graduate studies and on to this day, Karen and Signe have come to realize that their work embodies profound conversations that strengthen their art as well as their friendship. Each has her own distinctive process for making art.

Signe expresses interest with viscosity of paint and large sweeping strokes of color. She also creates monotypes, an almost lost printmaking process that produces a one of a kind work of art. On the other side of the conversation, Karen’s figurative work has evolved into a fascination with free flowing media and evocative imagery.

Today, seeking to express essence, they work with abstract and semi-abstract images opening jewel boxes of vibrant color, media and form which drive the intensity they crave.
