The suspected accosted a female employee who was outside on a cigarette break. He displayed a weapon (handgun) and forced her to let him in the store. Central Hockey League names New Team the Sundogs
By Andrew Draper
For the Lonesome Valley Newsletter
Local sports fans have a new reason to celebrate now that the Prescott Valley Hockey Club and the Central Hockey League announced the name of the latest CHL expansion team; the Arizona Sundogs.
The team takes to the ice at the Prescott Valley Convention and Events Center in a little less than one year.
Team Co-owners Eric Lacroix and Shawn Fowler, along with Team President Hayne Ellis made the announcement at a standing-room only press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Buffalo Wildwings restaurant.
In a pre-conference release, Lacroix said he is very excited about taking this important step in getting his team to the ice.
“This is an exciting time,” he said. “We are thrilled to present an identity that both our franchise and fans throughout Northern Arizona can be proud of.”
A Sundog is the polarized light coming through ice crystals contained in certain types of clouds. They appear as brightly colored spots surrounding the sun at precise placements. They are often found in conjunction with a solar halo.
The team’s colors are black, red and silver.
The Arizona Sundogs join the Lubbock (Texas) Cotton Kings, Colorado Eagles, Wichita (Kansas) Thunder the Austin (Texas) Ice Bats and others in the fifteenth season of the CHL
The new name is the brainchild of Shelli Read, a fourth-grade teacher from Territorial Elementary school in Chino Valley.
Read is the winner of the club’s “Name the Team” contest, receiving two season tickets for the 06’-07’ opening season. Read was one of more than 2,000 entries from the U.S. and Canada.
The six finalists included Outlaws, Pronghorns, Vipers, Ambush and the Dust Devils.
In addition to the recreational opportunities the arena brings, Brad Fain, one of the principal partners in the development project, said he expects the team to impact the local economy to the tune of between $25-$30 million annually.
For team information call 772-5555.
